Motorcycle show rides into Javits Center

One of the nation’s largest motorcycle shows opens Friday at the Jacob Javits Center in Manhattan as dealers struggle with the effects of tight credit despite a surge last year in sales of scooters and certain motorcycles as $4-plus-a-gallon gasoline lured many new riders from four wheels to two.

Overall sales in the first nine months of last year by the major manufacturers of motorcycles and scooters fell by 2.2 percent from the same period a year earlier, says the Motorcycle Industry Council, a trade group.

Van Hooydonk said that, while the recession has depressed sales and made financing more difficult to obtain for would-be purchasers, sales of scooters, which accounted for 157,000 unit sales in 2007, rose by 50 percent last year through the third quarter as gasoline prices rose.

The show opens to the public at noon and closes at 5 p.m.
